Poetic Realism

Sambandar-Sanguine Penci-2007

This new work stems from my recent stay in Washington, DC. It hints at a new direction, a door opening through which I have not yet ventured. It was done in the Freer and the Sackler Galleries of Asian Art in the Smithsonian Museum. I discovered the Freer in a roundabout way, seeking refuge from the large, noisy, fast-moving crowds in the natural history museum. A tired pilgrim seeking sanctuary, I stumbled into the soothing spaciousness of the Asian aesthetic.

Intuitively I started with the hands of the Bodhisattva and Buddha statues. Something about their graceful gesture compelled me to sit down and begin to draw. There were secrets cradled within their lines. From there I wandered around the galleries, letting chance guide my steps and settling into the subjects which called out to me, and are seen on this page.
