Poetic Realism

Lori's Abstract-Colored Pencil-2003

I use soft colored pencils, slowly and gently building up layers of color, blending them together more or less densely, in order to achieve the effect of luminosity and richness which can be found only in pure light. I am interested in the play of color against color, sometimes confined within lines and forms, sometimes floating over the whole picture plane, uncontained and generous. I am pleased to see what happens when colors are added in layers, one merging into the other, yet retaining its own individual voice.

I am interested in the activity set loose in the eye when colors and forms meet. I am fascinated by the interplay of round against straight, large against small. I play with the shapes within the containment of the picture plane, with the endless possibilities that present themselves.
